Executive Summary Format

An executive summary format is the way an executive summary is put together or organized.

It is the overall summing up of the purpose of the business.  It gives an overall general idea about what your business is about.

It is generally located after the title section of your business plan and it is a very important part of your business plan.

There are eight sections that are a part of your executive summary format.  The competitive position is another section that can be added.  But you can include this in the target market section.

The sections are;

Introduction/Overview
Company Direction
Management Team
Product/Service Strategy
Production and Delivery
Target Market
Goals and Objectives
Finances

The Introduction/Overview section gives you a general overview about what your business is about.

The Company Direction gives you the general plan about what your company is planning on doing in the near and not so near future.

The Management Team is the people that are a part of your company’s management team.

The Product/Service Strategy is what your products are and the plans for your near and future product strategy.

The Production and Delivery gives an idea about where and how your products are produced and also how you plan to get them to your customers.

The Target Market is who your customers are specifically targeted for your products and/or services.

The Goals and Objectives are the plans for your business.  These are the plans your company has set a time limit to complete.  The limit is usually set from somewhere between 6 months to 5 years.

The Finances are how you plan to finance your business. Also how you have financed your business in the past.

Note: That you don’t have to include all of the sections in your executive summary.  You can format it to fit the needs of your business. For example, if you have a service business you may not want to include the production and Delivery section, because this section would not be relevant to your service business.
