I have a somewhat different viewpoint on what really is important in a Business Plan. First and foremost it is PEOPLE.

PEOPLE (INVESTORS) INVEST IN PEOPLE (YOU) NOT PAPER, NOT WORDS, OR SPREADSHEETS ETC.

While all of those traditional elements are needed what successful investors look for is a person with a clear vision and a strong commitment to doing whatever it takes to succeed.

Someone with passion and focus, who is totally-in, someone unwilling to accept anything other then success and who clearly knows what that success will look like. Someone, who can impassion others to follow his or her lead and to commit themselves to the common goal of success as defined in there vision.

The Plan i.e. - words, spreadsheets, marketing data, projections etc will rarely resemble the results achieved if that business becomes a reality. As you know projections are merely guesses that will be worthless the minute you finish putting them on paper.

They, the investors need to know that the PERSON they are investing in has the right stuff to deal with any and all situations that will inevitably come up as the business evolves.

Lastly, understand that there are very few real investors out there, there are many who consider themselves to be investors, those who find safety and security in pounds of paper, spreadsheets, projections etc as a means of justifying investing and who will most assuredly demand results based on those documents.

Be weary of investors who have never actually created or run a business, for they are armed with limited knowledge and will find it difficult to understand and as a result value the worth of the entrepreneurial spirit, which in my opinion is the most important element for achieving success.
